My thoughts
First of all I love the cover of this book. It immediately drew my eye and if I saw this on a shelf in a shop I would have put it in my basket. I would have to know what lay behind the open doorway; I am one of those people who love old quirky doors for the stories they could tell and this one hides a highly imaginative and colourful, the first book in a series. Josie James and the Teardrops of Summer has sprinkles of magic seen in the classics of Tom’s Midnight Garden and The Chronicle of Narnia. Josie is a natural heroine and the characters she meets are memorable and delightful, especially Asher the cockney talking dog and the places she visits are enchanting; I long to explore the streets of Suncroft myself. As an adult I was eager to find out more so it will be a great read for younger audience. My only regret is my daughter is too old to read this. It has everything she would have loved when she a few years ago – a realistic, independent, and intelligent protagonist, magic, huskies and secretive adventures. It would have been a joy to snuggle up under the duvet and share this book together.
Would I recommend?
Perfect reading for 7 – 11 years who need a little bit of magic and adventure.
