Book Title: We Other

Author: Sue Bentley

Publisher: Endeavour Venture

Release date: 6th June

Family secrets, changelings, and fairies you never want to meet on a dark night.
Jess Morgan’s life has always been chaotic.

When a startling new reality cannot be denied, it’s clear that everything she believed about herself is a lie. She is linked to a world where humans – ‘hot-bloods’ – are disposable entertainment. Life on a run-down estate – her single mum’s alcoholism and violent boyfriend – become the least of Jess’s worries.

My Thoughts

This book is pure magic. It lured me in like a faerie charming me into stepping into their faery kingdom. Sue Bentley has woven traditional folklore,  real life, well-formed characters and imaginative descriptions of her faeryland into a lyrical masterpiece. I have been spoilt this year with wonderful books that I could talk about for hours but this novel blew me away.

It is deliciously dark: you do not want these fairies at the bottom of your garden. Jess Morgan’s life in the real world is not easy as the daughter of an alcoholic and it does not shy away from the emotional impact that has. All the prominent characters are believable with their strengths and flaws;  they made me feel as if I knew them.  They immersed me in the story so I didn’t notice this novel was an epic 560 pages. In fact, I did not want it to end.

 Would I recommend?

Don’t wait to order this book if  dark fairytale twists are your  thing. It is classed as a YA book but it is mature and could easily fit on an adult shelf. I am enchanted by this book. Before I had finished I made my daughter order it – HINT:  it is on offer if  you pre-order. This is novel is will be on my forever shelf to be reread because I am sure I will discover new things in the details I may have missed the first time round.
